##  Review Process 

The application deadline and review dates for the next meeting of the BBS Faculty Membership Committee will be updated on our website as soon as it has been approved by the BBS Executive Committee.



 

##  Faculty Membership Criteria & Forms of Service 

A) Eligibility for membership in BBS requires a full-time, tenure-track faculty appointment (Assistant, Associate, or full Professor) at Harvard Medical School.

B) To maintain membership as a BBS Thesis Advisor or Co-Mentor, each faculty member must attend or facilitate an approved mentorship workshop either before or within one year of accepting a new BBS PhD student for thesis research. Approved workshops include CIMER curriculum-based workshops offered by HILS/GSAS, the new Harvard Core for Mentorship Excellence, or equivalent programs such as training for the HHMI Gilliam and Hanna Gray fellowships. **Faculty who do not complete this requirement may have their membership suspended until the requirement is fulfilled.**

C) All BBS Faculty agree to participate annually in BBS program events and recruiting activities.

D) All BBS Faculty agree to serve on our advising and governance committees (e.g. Admissions, Program Advising, Preliminary Qualifying Examination, and Dissertation Advisory Committees) when requested by the program heads or committee chairs.

E) All BBS Faculty must agree to support our graduate curriculum via teaching in at least one of our BBS required courses, such as the core courses BCMP200, BBS230, BBS330, CB201, and GEN201, or the Medsci300 Responsible Conduct of Research course. We also prefer each BBS Member to make additional contributions to other core and advanced courses by acting as course director, lecturer, or discussion leader. Other contributions to OGE educational resources are welcome, but they may not be considered sufficient if few BBS students benefit.

F) Maintenance of membership as a BBS Thesis Advisor requires thesis project sponsorship within 9 years of initial membership approval. Exceptions can be made for faculty that make extraordinary contributions to graduate education in BBS. If faculty members lose membership status due to this rule, they may reapply to be reinstated if a BBS student requests a research rotation in their lab.

G) Maintenance of membership as a BBS Thesis Advisor requires annual submission or update of a specialized NIH training biosketch that outlines content required for T32 applications. In addition, we require that faculty members supply additional trainee data for T32 applications when requested, including responses to surveys designed to supply data for training grant applications and/or program evaluations.

H) Maintenance of membership as a BBS Thesis Advisor also assumes financial means and infrastructure to support thesis research for new students.



 

##  HILS Membership 

Biological and Biomedical Sciences (BBS) is part of the [Harvard Integrated Life Sciences Federation](https://gsas.harvard.edu/programs/life-sciences) (HILS), a consortium that brings together 13 life sciences PhD programs at Harvard. By joining BBS, you automatically become a member of HILS, giving you access to the entire HILS community. This allows students from any HILS-affiliated program to rotate in or join your lab. Similarly, if you are already a HILS member through another one of the 13 life sciences programs, you have the opportunity to host our students.
