Our lab studies the molecular and cellular basis of novel organismic physiology and behavior. We emphasize curiosity-driven science and exploration, using comparative approaches featuring a range of unusual and specialized organisms that are uniquely suited to understanding particular biological processes. Examples of projects in the lab include efforts to understand the origin of novel sensory organs using unusual fish-with-legs called sea robins as a model, and exploring the origins of novel organelles in photosynthetic sea slugs. Our goal is to discover new biology and reveal conserved and fundamental principles that operate across biological systems and impact human health.
