Drug combination that reduces oxygen levels in tissues improves Parkinson’s symptoms in mice
Study shows possible therapeutic benefits of a new “hypoxia-in-a-pill” regimen in three neurodegenerative diseases including Parkinson's.
Highlights
- Studies in mouse models have previously shown that continuously breathing low-oxygen air may be beneficial in Parkinson’s disease and rare diseases involving mitochondrial dysfunction, but this raises practical and safety issues.
- To address these challenges, Broad scientists have developed an optimized two-drug combination that induced hypoxia and improved symptoms of neurodegeneration in mouse models of three diseases, including Parkinson’s disease.
- A new paper reports that the regimen appears more effective than a previous version with no signs of negative side effects commonly associated with hypoxia.
